Think
Now, we all know plenty of liberals who are well over 40: Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi... I can't name them all. I could spend all day speculating as to why these people retain their childish outlook, but for this post I want to address a different issue.
For those 20-somethings out there who have a heart and naturally tend toward the left, I ask: Have you ever put any real thought into your beliefs? Most YOUNG people who have a liberal bent only think that way because they want to end poverty, suffering, violence, etc., and who doesn't want that? However they are disillusioned when it comes to how to solve these problems. It's primarily due to thinking on a very superficial level, such as:
"People are poor? Solution: Give them money." (Welfare)
"People are killed by guns? Solution: Ban guns."
Please don't tell me you think these are reasonable....and don't try to tell me that these examples are over-simplifications either. There are people who call these things viable solutions. It's just not that simple though. It's not that complicated either, but solutions DO require SOME thought.

Laws
Ask yourself the question: "Does this give me more freedom or does it take a tiny bit of it away?"
That's the test. If the result will not be more freedom, it is almost certainly another stone laid down on the path to slavery.
Do you think I'm being melodramatic? Chances are you need to wake up...

Tax on Soda?
Uhh... Are you kidding me?
The number one thing is: No tax is going to do anything about obesity -- except make the government more obese. (Seriously government, you're too big -- you should lose some weight!) This is an excuse!
All kinds of "studies" have been cited to indicate that this can work. However, people can setup studies to make them show virtually whatever they want them to show.
I have a question though: At what point did it become the government's job to solve problems?
Seriously. Now I'm pretty young, and that's been one of government's roles longer than I've been around, but why?
I would like to elect a representative who's platform mostly involves sitting on his hands. What would happen if they all just sat on their hands for a while instead of doing stuff? I mean, go play golf [more] or something. Just stop legislating.

Equality
From Killers of the Dream by Lillian Smith
Now I'm not against equality, mind you, but it's the artificial imposing of it on society that is the issue. Her last sentence -- and thousands of years of human experience -- show us that if it does anything, it brings everyone down to the lowest level. There is no such thing as "leveling up".
This is true everywhere:
You cannot become hungry enough to feed one starving person;
You cannot become poor enough to make another person wealthy;
You cannot become stupid enough to make another person smart;
You cannot be weak enough to make one weak person strong;
Etc, etc.
And yet, as obvious as these examples may sound, this is EXACTLY what our notion of "equality" amounts to -- making everyone equally WEAK.
Equality -- like freedom -- is a condition of birth into this world. Neither is dispensed according to fellow men, and therefore neither can be directed or granted to guarantee anybody anything. In fact, the only thing men can do to affect either is to RESTRICT them.

Freedom
What this amounts to is that a person has all the freedom they want, right up until the point that they begin to infringe on somebody else's. This is a fine place to draw the line.
But what if a government decided (after many studies, and careful deliberation between the smartest minds available -- of course) that it had to protect you from...........yourself? You know, it's a dangerous world out there and there are lots of bad people willing to break the law in order to take advantage of you in some way. How could anyone be capable of working their way through the minefield that is everyday life without the assistance of some well-meaning people to hold their hands, or even clear the "mines" for them?
The answer is that making/finding/struggling for your own way through life is part of THE MEANING OF LIFE. We're not meant to go through life, staying quiet and still for as many years as possible until we die. To get the most out of it, you have to get in there and mix it up, get dirty, maybe get some bumps and bruises and break a sweat. That's figuratively and, if you want, literally too.

Preface
America is the greatest country in the history of Mankind. The number one reason for this fact is the astounding levels of freedom we've enjoyed.
I'm afraid, however, that most people today simply do not realize how important freedom is. It's funny (funny-interesting, not funny-haha) to hear today's talking heads say things about our political drama... and then listen to a clip from the 70's (for example) and hear someone saying exactly the same thing. I think it's safe to assume (actually, it's well documented) that people have been saying exactly that same thing from the time our current constitution was ratified. So what's different now?
What's different is that after 220+ years of this, it's never been more clear: We're heading in the wrong direction!
Look, here's a couple of things in my own order of priority that I think most people would agree are important to a smooth, enjoyable life:
1. freedom
2. safety/security
3. equality
This list is not intended to be all-inclusive, you can probably think of several more to add. My issue is with people's priorities. We all know the motto "Safety First!" Rubbish. Usually it's used in a workplace setting due to legal liability issues. Equality? Don't get me started. (I guess I'm getting myself started, aren't I?). The only reason equality made it to number 3 on this list is because there are only 3 things on it! That issue deserves its own post though so I'll save it. This list is meant to bring to light mainly the first two, which are often at odds with each other, i.e. it seems you have to sacrifice a little of one to have more of the other.
A pretty famous quote goes, "Those who would sacrifice freedom for security deserve neither." -Benjamin Franklin
Think about it....
Most importantly: Although I'll attempt to present reasons why and how freedom is ideal for achieving this goal or that goal, I must emphasize the main reason for advocating extreme levels of freedom... It allows for the most fulfilling life you can imagine for yourself. It is more than just a means to an end, a life of freedom is its own glorious end!
Number One
That might sound kind of vague to some, but my goal here is to show how freedom can be the antidote to many of humanity's everyday problems. I don't actually have all the answers articulated yet, but that's what this blog is for.
Many people speak of the necessity for freedom in the market i.e. free market -- and of course healthcare is a major current issue in which the government is threatening to take away one of our most basic freedoms. I'll give my takes on these subjects and more -- mostly by providing links to smarter people than myself.
I'll also seek to extend the principles of freedom to improve relationships, parenting, and the overall enjoyment of life -- all of which I am working on in my own life -- just to name a few.
Most importantly though, I hope to just wake a few people up. If I can point just a handful of people to Milton Friedman, for example, that otherwise never would have heard of him, then I guess I did something positive with this.
So, without any futher commentary, I'll start with that. If you are so inclined, try http://www.ideachannel.tv/ . This site has lots of great videos from a lecture series he did years ago. You can also search for Milton Friedman on youtube and take your pick; they're all good.
